The apostasy to which Joseph referred is individual apostasy, not universal apostasy.

The statement continues to be relevant, because people still fall away from the Church, and the most common reason for this is that they either don't like the way things are run by their leaders, or they have let their feeling be hurt.

It is not necessary to don the Anti-Christ suit to apostatise, all it takes is an internal rumbling and grumbling about the way things ought to be, rather than the way they are.

Joseph's most severe critics were members, sometimes apostles, and other leaders who felt that Joseph had taken some wrong paths.

No doubt there were some among the exiting Israelites that didn't like the desert wanderings and longed for 'the flesh post of Egypt" and who left Moses and the gullible to make their way back into slavery.

It is possible to apostatise whilst sitting and waiting for the sacrament to reach you.

Apostasy is a difficult subject to address in just 40 to 50 minutes. I can understand that. On the other hand, I'm not so sure that "demands that don't exist in the same form today" for apostasy. In that regard, see President Benson's comments at Wolves in Sheep's Clothing. If anything, there is a greater need, but the wheat and the tares must grow together until the appointed time.
